The last town we stayed in before our continuous 27 hour drive back to Denver, was Guanajuato. Yes, continuous 27 hour drive.

Standing above Guanajuato, Mexico

Guanajuato is amazing. So, even though Nate had gone through Guanajuato on his drive down before I met him, we went again. This time, I wanted to experience this colonial town first hand. When you enter Guanajuato, it feels as if you’ve just stepped into Europe. The streets are cobblestone and most of them are closed off to vehicle traffic. The cars drive under the city through a maze of tunnels dimly lit with work lights hanging from above.
The buildings, which are smattered with color emit Mexican flair mingling with the European-looking colonial charm of the architecture and design of the city. The two together, set the stage for this enchanting place.
Between vegetarian street food and the vegetarian sections on each restaurant’s menu, Guanajuato is a vegetarian paradise. When I asked the waiter if something on the menu was vegetarian, they proceeded to make sure I could eat egg or cheese products. If you know much about the battle of finding vegetarian food in other countries, you know that when this happens, it is pretty promising. The food was amazing, just how Nate had promised me.

Having fun in Guanajuato

Each night, the town was full and alive. The pedestrian streets were packed with people of all age, listening to all the mariachi bands and entertaining themselves with one of the many things going on. I have never heard more amazing mariachi bands than the ones I heard in Guanajuato. The 10-piece bands complete with horns, guitars and voices would surround your table for a full, breathtaking audio experience.

At night, above the city.

The last night we were in Guanajuato, there was a VW car show in the main part of downtown, a walking/singing dinner party that lasted hours, roaming all over historic Guanajuato, led by minstrels dressed in medieval clothing, and there was a free folk ballet happening in one of the many town squares.

After 4 months, crossing back into the US

As we pulled out of Guanajuato, we decided we were ready to be home, ready to see Sage, and decided to drive until we couldn’t drive any further. Twenty-seven hours later, without any stopping for sleep, Harmony rolled into Denver with 263,300 miles. It’s good to be back.

We are now in Mexico. Harmony hit 260,000 miles on our way through Mexico. It feels as if we have now officially begun our return trip home-we are in our last country and the days are ticking by.
As much fun as I have everyday waking up at whatever time I want to, going and jumping in the waves in the ocean, then reading or jumping in the pool, then going back to the ocean in the evening to play in the waves and watch the sunset, then coming back and eating dinner-it becomes the same thing everyday. Nate and I were talking this morning and saying, ‘we are the type of people that need change.’ We could have stayed in Boquete, Panama indefinitely since we were doing something with a purpose, but now that we lay around aimlessly (quite pleasantly, may I add)-we can only do it for so many weeks. Though I’m living in paradise, swimming, lounging, and sunning-I am ready for something different. I am ready to start our return trip home.

260,000 miles!

Let me back track a little bit…

One of our first days in Mexico was a big day-we hit one more Mayan ruin, Palenque, visited a waterfall, Misol-Ha, and then went swimming in some cascading pools, Aqua Azul all before finding a place to stay in San Cristobal.
The ruins were pretty amazing, but we went through pretty quickly-I am about ruined out right now. But it is beyond words, thinking of how people lived in the same buildings I was walking through so many years back.

The view of Palenque from the top of a temple.

Nathan and I in front of Misol-Ha.

From behind the waterfall, inside a cave.

Hanging out in the Aqua Azul pools.

Aqua Azul pools

We ventured back to San Cristobal, Mexico and found it a little different than we had from 3 months ago. Three months ago we were searching out shade; now we bundled up in all the layers we had to stay warm. But we ate all the street food we could and found plenty of places to watch the World Cup in the company of many Europeans (sadly, the American support was lacking).

The not so usual picture of us hanging out in Mexico.

After a couple days of my feet being numb from cold, we set out for the warm sunshine of the Pacific Coast with three German guys who were looking for the same warm weather. It seems as though, the Central Pacific Coast is dotted with many towns: some of them, small little gems sitting along the sandy coastline and the others, disappointing villages strewn with trash and dilapidated hotels.

The view from our room at San Augustillo.

Nate getting in some quality guy time with one of our German friends.

There are many things I’m going to miss about Mexico and Central America…
-There is always a place to watch the soccer games and a lot of people to join you.
-The food!! (As long as it’s vegetarian for me, and taco stands for Nate)
-The laid-back, easy vibe, and very friendly people down here.
-The amount of warm beaches everywhere!!
-The plethora of tropical rainforests and wildlife: monkeys, monkeys, monkeys!
-The fact that we can stay at a place for $40 a night and have it be the nicest, most luxurious place we have ever stayed at.
-How easy it is to make the freshest, yummiest mango smoothies you’ve ever tasted.

However, as much as we have been raving about Central America and Mexico throughout our blog posts, I have to say that being down here for so long reminds me of how much I really like the US.
-When you say “vegetarian” and ask if the food does not have any kind of meat in it, the question is also presumably indicating whether the same is true for the sauce that is all over it.
-There are toilet seats on every toilet in the US.
-In the US, more often than not, when I speak to a male, my words are heard. They don’t usually ignore me and then speak to my husband.
-Whereas you can find some amazing coffee in some areas down here, you can always find some kind of great coffee in the US (well, speaking for the NW and CO anyway).
-There aren’t as many flea-bitten, sad dogs wandering around the streets in the US.
-If we never see a tope (English: very obscenely jutty and elevated speed bump) again, we will be the happiest people who ever lived.

Well, it has been longer than we had hoped since our last post. It seems as though the posts get put on the back burner when we are having fun. We spent 11 days in Belize, ten of those we spent with my parents. The first four days we spent in San Ignacio where we went on a tour into Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave- this tour sent us 3 km into a cave with crystal clear waters and beautiful, sometimes towering stalactites and stalagmites.
Throughout the cave we had to swim numerous times, but were rewarded at the end with untouched artifacts and human remains. The archeologists say the human remains were from human sacrifices sent up to the gods. The tour was an unforgettable experience. We spent some time in the nearby ruins of Xunantunich and in the hot afternoons we spent our time swimming in the Rio Frio pools.

After San Ignacio we headed to Cay Caulker, a beautiful Belizean Island out in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. We spent 5 days there snorkeling, laying around the pool, watching the World Cup, laying around in the a/c condo we were renting, and playing at the beach and in the ocean. The coral and the fish were absolutely spectacular. But snorkeling with Manatees was probably the highlight of the week, of course, it ranked second to getting to spend ten days with my parents.

“Only 6 km the first day and 8 km the second day,” that is the information Nate thought he received from our friend who had set up the trip for us. We raved to eachother about how this was going to be one of the easiest treks we had ever done-they even had mules that carried our bags! As we started hiking, we turned to the guide and asked him again how far we were going that day:
“25 km,” he said. What??
“How long is the hike?” we asked.
“60 km,” he said.
“You mean round trip” I said.
“Nope. 60 km to El Mirador” our guide replied.
We didn’t believe it-until we had been hiking for a couple hours. After 4 days of hiking and 120 km (about 75 miles) we realized that our guide had been right.
El Mirador was hot, buggy, dry and beautiful. I broke down on the 4th day and paid for a shower. (I did it Charla-I have now finally paid for a shower!) After that night, I realized how ridiculous it had been for me to not pay for one earlier-I slept 100% better.
The place was pretty amazing. The ruins in El Mirador have not been fully excavated and Nate, Brett and I were the only tourists in El Mirador for the day. It seemed as if you were discovering it for the first time, hiking through the trees and seeing a grand, partially excavated temple emerging through the trees.

Seeing the pyramid, Danta through the trees.

The night we stayed in El Mirador, we coaxed our guide into letting us climb to the top of the temple and staking our tent. We slept on top of El Tigre, a temple built around 200 BC, measuring 55 meters high surrounded by a sea of green trees flocked with lorokeets. It was surreal-falling asleep to brilliant colored skies as the sun went down and awaking to stunning pink skies in the morning.

A view from our tent on top of El Tigre.

After our long hike out, we jumped in our air-conditioned car, and drove to Flores, Guatemala to meet Nate’s parents who came in on the bus to meet us for 10 days. That next day we went to Tikal to see some more Mayan ruins that had been more excavated and pimped out for tourism. It was amazing to see what El Mirador would look like if more of the trees and earth were removed from the ruins.

Atop one of the temples in Tikal.

We have been escaping the heat, enduring the rain, and longing for Oregonian breweries while we hang out in Los Naranjos, Honduras. We ran into a friend in Managua, Honduras that we had met in Panama about a month and a half ago. We told him about the Honduran brewery we read about in the Lonely Planet-an Oregonian brewmaster that had set up a microbrewery in a small town on the side of a Honduran lake-the lake teeming with wildlife and around 400 different species of birds. So, we set out on a caravan with our friend who had bought a motorcycle in Panama.
We haven’t seen as much rain in Central America as we have at this brewery. But the local brews have been amazing and watching the roads turn into rushing rivers has been pretty incredible. It has been more incredible watching it from the inside of a car as opposed to experiencing it while riding on a motorcycle.

The Pulhapanzak waterfalls-a small jaunt from town.

At Lago de Yojoa we went on a rowboat birding excursion led by John Muir. Or rather a a European naturalist who looked like what Nate fantasizes John Muir to look like-very long white beard, rubber boots, floppy hat, who spoke slowly and precisely and seemed to have spent a lot of time pondering nature. As we were rowed in the small wooden, hand-made boat skirting right up to the tropical rain foredst in the drizzling rain, we saw about 50 different species of birds. It was amazingly picturesque.
On June 1 we will be headed into the rainforest of Guatemala, starting a 4 day trek to some partially excavated Mayan pyramids, El Mirador, Guatemala. As we dodge raindrops and bugs, I’m sure we will end up with some pretty epic memories.
P.S. Nate just shaved his whole face and buzzed his head. He is definitely still the hottest man in Central and North America.

We have been in a very hot, humid climate for a bit too long. But now we have escaped to Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
When we were in hot, humid Leon, Nicaragua we stayed in a pretty sweet hostel where turtles roamed the corridors freely, tasty mojitos were $0.75 during happy hour and they invented something called “Volcano boarding.” Sweet.
Proud to say my husband is posted on the board as one of the few people to be crazy enough to try and break a speed record. His speed record is 81 kph (that is 50mph)-the first place speed record is 82 kph. Perhaps if he would not have crashed and done three over-head tumbles at the very end of his run he may have been clocked as the first place speed holder. He is still feeling the effects of that crash. But his name is on a board in that hostel in Nicaragua and I am sure it will be for quite some time.

Laurie rocking the orange protective suit before boarding down the volcano!

Here in Matagalpa we wondered around an AIDS awareness carnival for kids, have drunk a lot more coffee than normal (this is the coffee capitol) and went on a coffee tour. The tour was pretty incredible. If I were a local I would be working at Selva Negra, coffee farm. The place was beautiful. And to top it off, the working conditions and environmental standards are remarkable. The workers on the farm make the average Nicaraguan wage plus get fed 3 meals a day (while they are working), get free housing and free utilities. Not a bad gig. Not only did we get a tour of the coffee plantation, we saw the pigs, cows and chickens they raise, the many composting areas, worm composting, acres of virgin forests, their hydro electric power station, and where they produce methan gas from the coffee shells to use for their cooking. I then had too much coffee, some yummy chocolate cake, talked to the goofy German/Nicaraguan owner and went hiking through their protected forests. Beautiful.
By the way, they supply coffee for Allegro coffee sold at Whole Foods. This whole process has made me feel that I can deter from buying soley Peet’s Coffee and buy Allegro coffee too.
When I think of taking a vacation during the rainy season, I cringe a bit. But as we travel through C. America in the rainy season, I realize that I love it still! It has not been raining all day long and when it does rain the climate it is still warm. The downpours are beautiful and a nice respite from the blazing sun. It makes me want to go out and swim down the street.
The last excursion we had in Matagalpa was a pretty amazing chocolate tour. The chocolate “factory” was set in a small building the size of a house. The chocolate and all the ingredients are organic, the chocolate is amazing and everything was done by hand-the grinding of the cacao, the roasting down to the wrapping of the chocolate bars. They even use a glue stick to hand glue each paper wrapper around each chocolate bar. After tasting all the chocolate, they sat us down with a brownie, coffee, and jamaica juice. My goodness. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to eat anything sweet for ages. That didn’t last.

We found a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica that found us a cheap replacment axel. The total cost $78, including the used part and the labor. Not too bad.
After the car was fixed wedrove to the Nicoya Peninsula and spent three days with Titus and his family. We spent a couple more days trying to learn the art of surfing. We might just be getting the hang of it.
This morning we crossed the border to Nicaragua. It only took two hours this time instead of three hours (as it did on the way down South). Thus far, this is the worst border crossing in Central America. We are now in Granada. It is a beautiful colonial town next to Lake Nicaragua. We have decided to spend a week or two in Nicauragua before heading to Tikal, Guatemala to meet my parents for ten days.
